theatre. In the majority of the private hospitals the theatre also serve as the labour room. The theatre must be a fairly large room with a very good illumination and adequate ventilation.
Majority of the private clinics cannot afford a standard theatre lamp but use florescent bulbs to ensure proper illumination. The theatre table must be of standard dimension even though majority
in use are fabricated locally. An oxygen cylinder and suction machine are of vital importance in the theatre.

It is advised that the theatre be properly scrubbed after every surgery or after every delivery if it is used for both. Should any septic condition be handled in the threatre, beside scrubbing it properly, the theatre must in addition be carbonised. The theatre must be
closed when not in use. Everybody entering the theatre must as a rule remove his or her shoes and put on the theatre shoe. Alternatively a shoe cover can be provided.
Doctors and nurses are advised to scrub properly and put on the appropriate gowns, face mask, head gear and hand gloves before embarking on surgery. The instrument must be adequately autoclaved. The practice whereby some hospitals do not gown
properly and do not authoclave their instruments for surgery is to be condemned.

[lock]...Download PDF ...[/lock]There are so many instruments in use in the theatre. Although it is the duty of the trained theatre nurse to arrange and autoclave surgical instruments, the general nurse and midwives too, especially those of them in private hospitals, are expected to know
the basic instruments and especially how to arrange them in packs. Care must be taken when arranging the instruments in their different packs to avoid mix-up.
The different packs in use are :
1. General pack.
2. Caesarean Section (C/S) pack.
3. Dilatation and curettage (D & C) pack.
4. Delivery pack.
5. Circumcision pack.
6. Incision and drainage (I & D) pack
The different instruments in each pack will be listed HERE as to serve as a guide to those nurses who do not know how to arrange and pack the instruments.
As already stated, adequate care must be taken to avoid a mix-up and it is advised that packs be arranged by two nurses if need be.
