GUM BLEEDING CAUSES
For the gum to bleed implies there is inflammation. Inflammation of the gum is characterized by pain, swelling, redness and bleeding. This condition if left untreated will gradually progress to periodontitis (destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth). The causes of gum bleeding include :
1. Poor oral hygiene.
2. Improper tooth brushing.
3. Lack of function of the teeth.
4. Malalignment and crowding of the teeth.
5. Bacterial plaque as the primary agent.
Other systemic conditions such as puberty, menopause, pregnancy, blood disorders and diabetes mellitus contribute to gum bleeding.
WHAT ARE THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF GUM BLEEDING?
Prevention involves adherence to oral hygiene instructions which help to prevent gum bleeding. To maintain good oral hygiene, patients or individuals are advised:1. To visit a dental clinic where all the causes of gum bleeding such as microbial plaque, calculus, food debris, etc, are removed by the therapist.
2. To use warm salt water once the bacterial plaque, food debris, calculus, etc are removed by the dental therapist and possibly prescribe vitamin C tablets and plenty of fruits. Other oral hygiene instructions have been discussed HERE.
