As a dental nurse assistant,  you should know your duties and responsibilities, and always work hand in hand with your dentist, by providing support for him/her during any dental procedure.  

Your job starts with preparing the various materials needed and setting out the proper instruments and equipment available and to clean and sterilize the used dental instruments. In Addition, your duties may include helping your dentist to record information about the patient’s oral health, processing radiographs, and stock control.


In general dental practice, a dental nurse’s duties may also including helping at reception – making appointments with the patients, getting involved in the administration of the practice and collecting money. 

The roles that are undertaken vary depending upon the individual practice and interests of the nurse. However, has a dental nurse your skills and your objective are very important.

The duties of dental nursing are classified into two groups I.e surgery and office duties.
Dental assistant surgery duties and office duties

DENTAL NURSE OFFICE DUTIES:



  • Responsible for supervision and cleaning.
  • Reception of patients and dental company representative.
  • Arranging current and recall appointments.
  • Completion and filing of patient individual records.
  • Recording all attendance and treatment in the day book.
  • Ordering and storage of supplies.
  • Management of financial records.
  • Rolling of gauze is of great importance.
  • Responsible for x-ray protective cover.
  • Responsible for patients rights.
  • Responsible for dental materials
  • Attend all correspondence.

      DENTAL NURSE SURGERY DUTIES

The duties of a good DN in the surgery are as follows:


  • Care and maintenance of equipment and instrument.
  • Care of drugs.
  • Preparation of surgery and setting out the instrument.
  • Sterilization.
  • Recording and charting.
  • Chairside assistant during all operative procedure.
  • Pre and post-operative care of patients.
  • Processing and mounting radiograph.
  • Responsible for pre and post denture delivery
  • Doors to surgery must be kept close.
  • Delivery of examination set to the dentist.

Not only that, surgery also include the following

IN THE SURGERY

  •  Drawers and cupboards in the surgery should be closed immediately after use.
  • Tidiness is indicative of efficiency.
  • Cupboards and drawers should be kept clean by lining with self-adhesive materials, which can be wiped with a damp cloth lining should be removed periodically.
  • All electronics equipment must be short down after use.

Personality Traits of a Dental Nurse

In addition, as a dental nurse you must reassure your patient and keep them calm, and above all, you must be able to work as part of a team in general. This is a very essential aspect in dental surgery department because it is often stressful and you have to learn the ability to work under pressure as quickly as possible, and coping with multiple changes of plan often with little or no notice.

As a dental nurse, you are in a better position to recognize all patients trouble during their visit. if you notice a patient is particularly nervous keep him/her calm. You are the first person to attend to a Patients and make things easier for the patient to confide in you and explain any difficulty he/she is experiencing, which may be important for the dentist to know, especially if it affects their dental treatment. 

In this way, you will be able to improve communication skills between the dentist and the patient.

A dental nurse also needs to be highly organized and ensure that essential equipment and materials are easily accessible during any dental surgical procedure.

Most dental nurses are employed in general dental practice and others are employed by the hospital service, the armed forces, the salaried primary care dental service and companies that provide dental care for their employees.
